Portland cement production generates elevated CO₂ emissions on the order of 500 kg to 600 kg per ton of cement, and this fact drives the development of cements with lower environmental impact. Consequently, metallurgical slag activation methodologies through accelerated carbonation have emerged as a promising alternative to produce clinker-free binders. This study evaluated the effect of process parameters on the compressive strength of mortars produced with electric arc furnace slag (EAFS) and sand in a mix ratio of 1:3. Cylindrical specimens were subjected to accelerated carbonation at a range of temperatures (40 °C, 60 °C and 80 °C), CO₂ pressures (5 bar, 10 bar, 40 bar and 60 bar) and process times (2 h, 4 h and 6 h) and compared to control samples which were not subjected to CO₂ activation. Statistical analysis (ANOVA and Tukey’s test) determined that carbonation time was a significant factor for all temperature ranges, while CO₂ pressure was only relevant at 60 °C. Optimized conditions yielded a compressive strength of 12.56 MPa compared to 0.97 MPa of the control sample - an increase of 1,195%. Results confirmed that accelerated carbonation was an efficient methodology to produce sustainable EAFS-based cementitious materials with superior mechanical properties.
