“But then you already want too much, right?” An initial study about the affirmative action system in Postgraduate Program at the Federal University of Rio Grande (FURG)

Abstract

In 2022, the system of quotas (Law n° 12/711/12) completed a decade of existence. With this law, it was possible to observe a growth in the access of Black students to higher education in Brazil, this a direct result of the pressure and struggle of the Black movements that began in the 1980s and 1990s. However, so many postgraduate programs in the country leave gaps in terms of quotas systems, which is a direct reflection of the social, racial, political and economic inequalities in our society, as well as the maintenance of a meritocratic logic in education. Therefore, we observed both general postgraduate information between the years 2010 and 2022, from different areas of knowledge from the Federal University of Rio Grande, Master’s in Law and Social Justice, Master’s and Doctorate in Environmental Education and Mater’s in Oceanology, between 2020 and 2022, produced directly in the University system, we problematizing the quantitative data on the entry modalities and access to the system of quotas in these programs, in view of the Resolution of this institution about the system of quotas for the postgraduate courses. Even with the university's internal regulation, we still observe a percentage over70% of white students occupying the postgraduate programs in the year 2022, as well as gaps of the control quota system in the selection and doubts about the access and permanence of quota students in different programs at the higher education.
