CONSTRUCTED WETLANDS AS CARBON SINKS OR EMISSION SOURCES – A REVIEW

Resumen

Ante el escenario de calentamiento global, se han llevado a cabo varias investigaciones sobre la eliminación de carbono como forma de mitigar los efectos del cambio climático. El uso de humedales construidos para el tratamiento de aguas residuales es conocido, sin embargo la cantidad de estudios sobre el secuestro de carbono de este sistema es aún limitada. Por ello, la revisión sistemática y bibliográfica pretendía exponer las características de los humedales construidos en relación con las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero. Las bases de datos utilizadas fueron Scopus, Springer y Google Scholar y los términos seleccionados estaban relacionados con humedales construidos y gases. Se concluyó que el humedal construido subsuperficial horizontal tiene el potencial de convertirse en un sumidero de carbono, debido al carbono retenido en las plantas, y puede emitir menos N2O que el WC de flujo vertical; en cuanto a la emisión de CH4, es importante conocer las especies de plantas adoptadas y el tipo de WC por su influencia en las emisiones de metano.
