Abstract

The recovery of urban solid waste is a matter of global importance, and, in Brazil, it is dependent on the destination that the material will have after its disposal. Generally, if the waste is properly separated and has a commercial interest, it can be recycled; otherwise, it is wasted, leading to environmental, economic, and social problems. Often these materials are widely regarded as problematic, due to their obvious difficulties in recycling them, whether for technical or sanitary reasons. However, a large group of problematic waste has
gone unnoticed by the public, as it is often not considered as such. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to discuss the issue of the “invisible” waste, i.e., materials that, although technically easy to be recycled, have no commercial interest and are then prematurely discarded, in addition to being unknown by the public. Main examples of these materials are cited as well as ways are presented in which Design can contribute to adding value and reinserting them into new production cycles and, finally, it is discussed how this can impact society as a whole.
