Abstract

The objective of the study was to analyze the environmental, economic and social performance indicators of sustainable ports and the impact on the development of the local community. As a methodological procedure, we performed a systematic literature review of publications on indicators for sustainable ports, through searches in the ScienceDirect, Scopus and Web of Science databases. The main contribution of this research was to discuss at what level environmental, social and economic indicators support the port authorities, responsible for decision-making, in their efforts for sustainable development in harmony with the local community. A favorable survey of 11 sustainable port performance indicators in three main categories: (i) environmental, (ii) economic and (iii) social. The port sector has incomplete and fragmented public policies. To operate effectively, a sustainable port needs to act and work in accordance with certain indicators described in this study. It is concluded that among the indicators that were raised in the literature and that need to contemplate the “Triple Bottom Line” in sustainable ports, we highlight the management of the environment and energy, transparency in sustainability reports and investment in social projects.
