Abstract

The search for sustainable non-wood fibers highlights the underutilization
of agricultural residues, such as hemp stalks. This article evaluates
the technical viability of producing handmade paper from the external fiber
residue of industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa L.). The methodology compared
two artisanal protocols with reduced chemical intervention: (P1) short maceration
(3 hours) and (P2) prolonged maceration (10 days) followed by boiling
(2.5 hours). The results demonstrate that P1 led to incomplete defibration and
rough paper, whereas the optimized P2 produced a soft pulp and uniform, granulated
sheets. Paper produced using Protocol 2 was subjected to artistic application
tests (woodcut printing, screen printing, and mixed-media techniques),
demonstrating satisfactory performance and good stability when exposed to
water, as evidenced in the gouache wash technique. It is concluded that the artisanal
protocol is viable for transforming the residue into a high value-added
product aligned with the principles of the circular economy, while regulatory
challenges still influence the development of this production chain in Brazil.
