Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation scenario of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices in the Manaus Industrial Pole (PIM), identifying practical challenges and proposing strategies to overcome organizational barriers from a Human-Centered Design (HCD) perspective. The research is grounded in the dichotomy between the extrafiscal rationale underlying the Manaus Free Trade Zone (ZFM) and critical interpretations of the model as an economic enclave. This exploratory and descriptive study adopts a qualitative approach, based on a bibliographic and documentary review of academic theses and technical reports. The findings indicate that ESG adoption is constrained by a shortage of skilled labor, the high complexity of reporting systems, and a low perceived value of ESG practices within organizations. The study concludes that technology is a necessary but insufficient condition; ESG effectiveness depends on human-centered approaches capable of engaging organizational culture and transforming regulatory compliance into competitive advantage.

Master’s student in the Graduate Program in Design at the Federal University of Amazonas (UFAM). Holds a degree in Design from the same institution (2013). Currently works as a Software Designer at FIT - Institute of Technology. Her research focuses on Strategic Design, Human-Centered Design, and the application of ESG practices in the Manaus Industrial Pole.

Gean Flavio de Araujo Lima, UFAM - UNIVERSIDADE FEDERAL DO AMAZONAS

PhD in Design from the Federal University of Santa Catarina, with an emphasis on Design Management (2021). Master in Production Engineering from the Federal University of Amazonas, with an emphasis on Service and Process Management (2013). Holds specializations in Material Production for Distance Learning (2011) and Design, Advertising, and Marketing (2001), and a degree in Industrial Design (1998), all from the Federal University of Amazonas. He has experience in Design, with an emphasis on New Product Development, working mainly in the following research lines: industrial design, ergonomics, usability and user experience, innovation, and social and sustainable design. In graphic design, he works in advertising, developing promotional material and corporate identity systems, as well as projects for digital media and environmental signage.

Marcos Paulo Cereto, UFAM - UNIVERSIDADE FEDERAL DO AMAZONAS

Architect (UFRGS, 1999), Master in Theory, History, and Criticism of Architecture (PROPAR/UFRGS, 2003), and PhD in Theory, History, and Criticism of Architecture (PROPAR/UFRGS, 2020). Since 2013, he has been a professor at the Faculty of Technology of UFAM in the Architecture and Urbanism courses and in the Professional Master's Program in Design. He is the creator and coordinator of the Nucleus of Modern Architecture in the Amazon - NAMA (2016), a collective that brings together artists, architects, and researchers interested in modernity in the Legal Amazon. He organized and curated the exhibitions: XAMA Contemporary Architecture in the Amazon (2018-2019); L'Amazonie en Construction: l'architectures des fleuves volants (2019) in Paris; Resilient Amazonia Architecture (2021) at the Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism; Floating Bridges - Art in the Forest at MUSA (2021); Amazon Continent at the World Congress of Architects - UIA in Copenhagen (2023); and was curator of the 14th International Architecture Biennale of São Paulo with the theme: Extremes: Architectures for a Warming World (2025). He has given conferences and lectures in Russia, Switzerland, the United States, England, France, Slovenia, South Korea, as well as several Brazilian and Latin American cities. He organized the books XAMA: exhibition of contemporary architecture in the Amazon (2018) and Resilient Amazonia Architecture (2021) published by EDUA/UFAM. Currently, he is one of the editors of the scientific journal Docomomo Brasil and leads the CNPq/UFAM Research Group AMA - Modern Architecture in the Amazon.
