Um Olhar sobre o MST e o Massacre de Eldorado de Carajás

Abstract

The present work examines the trajectory of rural social movements in Brazil, from the Peasant Leagues to the establishment of the Landless Workers' Movement (MST), with a focus on April 17th as the International Day of the Struggle for Land. The study addresses the MST's struggle for agrarian reform, highlighting their occupations of unproductive land in accordance with the 1988 Federal Constitution, which advocates for the social function of rural property. The historical and legal analysis reveals the resistance faced by social movements due to land concentration and the violence perpetrated by public authorities and landowners. The chapters cover the evolution of rural social movements, from the Peasant Leagues to the MST, emphasizing the fight for Agrarian Reform and the challenges encountered. The study examines the legal and constitutional aspects of agrarian reform, focusing on the principle of the social function of property and the obstacles faced by the MST within the legal context. Additionally, the research aims to analyze the case of Eldorado dos Carajás as an emblematic event in the struggle for land, highlighting the causes, consequences, and legal challenges faced by rural workers after the 1996 massacre. The criminalization of social movements and the need to protect human rights in rural areas are also discussed. Finally, the work emphasizes the importance of the effective implementation of agrarian reform and the protection of rural workers' rights to promote a more just and equitable society. The research concludes that the struggle of rural social movements in Brazil is essential to achieving social justice and equality in the countryside, facing challenges such as resistance from landowners and state violence.
