Abstract

The increased use of synthetic textiles in recent decades has contributed to the accumulation of microplastics in rivers and oceans, harming aquatic life and humans. Thus, this study aims to present a set of papers published in journals that integrate the topics of microplastics, synthetic textile fibers and domestic washing of clothing. The present study seeks to present arguments for discussion based on a bibliographic review of the set of themes mentioned. For that, we used the method of systematic literature review proposed by Conforto, Amaral and da Silva (2011). The database used was the Portal de Periódicos CAPES (Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel). After filtering information proposed by the method, thirteen articles were selected for full reading. Subsequently, the papers were grouped by similarity and analyzed according to the guiding themes. As a result, it was evidenced that the presence of microplastics in the seas and oceans is mainly caused by the domestic washing process of synthetic fiber clothing. Furthermore, it is inferred that the amount of microplastics present in rivers and oceans tends to increase, given the large consumption of synthetic materials in progress.
