Abstract

Biotechnology offers exciting opportunities as more sustainable alternatives to fashion products. One of the most promising approaches is the manufacture of textile materials from living organisms, such as fungi and bacteria. This article presents an analysis of five researches dealing with the production of bacterial cellulose (BC) fabrics: Biocouture (LEE, 2011), Self-grown Fashion (NG; WANG, 2016), Bio-hacking Fashion (KAWASAKI; MIZZUNO, 2017), Tailor-shaped cultivation (CHAN; SHIN; JIANG, 2018), ZOA (MODERN MEADOWS, 2020). To choose these researches, 28 studies were reviewed that deal with the production of bacterial cellulose, obtained predominantly in the Science Direct databases and in the Taylor & Francis publisher. For the choice, the relevance of the research, the direction to the fashion area and the results obtained in the experiments were considered. As a result, a comparative table of the variables of the production process of bacterial cellulose materials is presented. It is believed that this information can contribute to the development of new studies, since most researches do not present data for all variables.
