Abstract

Interior design in architecture has traditionally focused on the functional and aesthetic organization of interior spaces. However, contemporary research recognizes that interior spaces play a significant role in shaping the urban environment. This article analyzes the relationship between interiority, architecture, and the city, proposing that interior design constitutes a spatial interface between the intimate scale of the individual and the collective dimension of urban space. Based on a systematic review of the literature and three case studies conducted between 2020 and 2025, the concepts of urban interiority, spatial experience, interior-exterior continuity, and scales of design are examined. The results show that interior spaces—such as atria, galleries, transit stations, cultural centers, and urban facilities—function as extensions of public space and influence the city’s social, cultural, and economic dynamics. Furthermore, a conceptual model is proposed to explain the multiscale relationship between interiority, architecture, and urbanism. Finally, it is concluded that integrating interior design with contemporary approaches to urban planning allows us to understand the city as a continuous spatial system, in which the domestic scale and the interior experience influence the production of urbanity.
