BLACK PERSONALITIES IN FOCUS

CONSTRUCTING NARRATIVES THROUGH DIGITAL COLLAGES

Abstract

This experience report presents the pedagogical activity “Black Personalities in Focus”, developed in the Sociology course at the Federal Institute of Santa Catarina (IFSC) – Araranguá Campus. The proposal aimed to combat the historical invisibilization of Black personalities, promoting their recognition and appreciation, in accordance with the Brazilian National Education Guidelines and Framework Law (LDB – Law 9.394/1996) and the reflections inspired by Black Consciousness Day. Second-year high school students were invited to create original digital collages using the Canva platform. Each student selected a Black personality from a collective curation organized by teachers from different areas, resulting in a list of 67 names, mostly Brazilian figures. The task consisted of producing a poster that integrated images, text, and historical context, highlighting the contributions and legacy of the chosen individual. The projects were exhibited in a school-wide display during Black Consciousness Week. The experience proved to be meaningful by encouraging aesthetic authorship, interdisciplinarity, and critical reflection on identity and racism. It also highlighted the potential of integrating technology, artistic creation, and anti-racist education, transforming the school into a space of symbolic production where students recognize themselves as subjects capable of reshaping historical narratives.
