Smallpox and yellow fever: sources of preoccupation in Desterro

Abstract

The survey of diseases what were epidemic in some region can be very useful to the work historiographical. An epidemic outbreak, generally, causes in the social group, impacts relevant depending on the layer social that affect. And, moreover, the relations established between disease and society depend on the mentality of an era, in other words, these relations are historical. In this article, it is intended, through documentary sources as chairman of the provincial reports and news stories, show how the diseases can be largely ignored or opposed by the public power in accordance with the interests in vogue. Here will be analyzed the smallpox and the yellow fever on capital of Santa Catarina and in the country, so extensive during the late nineteenth century, the early years of the Brazilian Republic.
