Spectacular Power and Generative Artificial Intelligences:
Debordian Lenses in Three Case Studies

This article proposes an analysis of the emergence of generative AIs through two key lenses. First, we examine the proximity between such technical systems and the exercise of integrated spectacular power — a concept developed by Guy Debord in the 1980s. Next, we investigate the relevance of the characteristics of a society under this form of power, as anticipated by the French philosopher. Methodologically, the study is supported by a comparative sociological analysis through contextual contrast. Finally, the essay probes the theoretical limits of Debord's conceptualization. To that end, we conduct three case studies through which we assess the applicability of the notion of integrated spectacular power.
