The cheesemaking practices, rooted in the colonial period and still prevalent in rural areas, are deeply embedded in the local way of life and food culture, and their commercialization holds significant economic importance for a number of predominantly rural municipalities. However, this activity has been increasingly subjected to illegalization through microbiopolitical instruments and mechanisms associated with the modern state, leading to frequent inspections, fines, and confiscations that primarily target the so-called "queijeiros," specialized intermediaries who collect cheeses from rural zones and distribute them to urban centers. The focus of this article is to analyze the role of these social actors, who are closely tied to the peasant universe. Their distinctive forms of governance and sophisticated technical practices have enabled the large-scale distribution of this food, often outside the bounds of formal legislation, certification, and safeguarding processes, thereby preventing the deterioration of living conditions in these municipalities
Leonardo Vilaça Dupin Copyright (c) 2025 Cadernos NAUI https://ojs.sites.ufsc.br/index.php/naui/article/view/7798 Fri, 24 Jan 2025 00:00:00 +0000 Conflicts between knowledge systems in the fisheries management of "aviãozinho" fishing https://ojs.sites.ufsc.br/index.php/naui/article/view/7754
Summary: In the development of public policies, there is a constant struggle between scientific and traditional knowledge, especially visible within state institutions. In the context of policies for fisheries management, divergences outweigh convergences, historically characterized by exclusionary and authoritarian approaches that marginalize artisanal fishermen, justified in the name of environmental conservation. This article proposes to analyze, through a case study involving a draft legislation developed by fishing communities from the southern coast of Santa Catarina and the Research and Management Center for Fisheries, Lagoons, and Estuaries, the dynamics of approximation and conflict between both forms of knowledge. The result of this conflict was the stagnation of the draft for over a decade, highlighting the authoritarian nature of state institutions, as well as internal disputes surrounding state apparatus.
Ana Paula Rainho Copyright (c) 2025 Cadernos NAUI https://ojs.sites.ufsc.br/index.php/naui/article/view/7754 Fri, 24 Jan 2025 00:00:00 +0000 The right to have rights in a conservation unit https://ojs.sites.ufsc.br/index.php/naui/article/view/7400
The article aims to analyze the territorial rights of the traditional community of Sertão do Ribeirão located in the city of Florianópolis/Santa Catarina in a municipal conservation unit, the MONA da Lagoa do Peri. The discussion comprises characterizing the community's traditional way of life and the rights emerging in the context. The notion of living population is employed to think about this group in relation to the territory it occupies as opposed to the legal category of resident population. In this sense, the nature and culture dichotomy does not explain reality. These categories cannot be understood in themselves but intertwined. In this scenario, there is a boiling of rights, not a collision of rights, which impels the construction of a new paradigm, in which man constitutes an ecologically balanced environment. To effectively guarantee the rights of the traditional community studied in an urban context, it is important to ensure that it exists and can continue to exist as a traditional community, which means guaranteeing its way of life. An inclusive city must not lose sight of the autonomy of the different groups that it comprises.
Ana Cristina Rodrigues Guimarães Copyright (c) 2025 Cadernos NAUI https://ojs.sites.ufsc.br/index.php/naui/article/view/7400 Fri, 24 Jan 2025 00:00:00 +0000 O corpo ecológico a partir do Quilombo da Serra do Evaristo https://ojs.sites.ufsc.br/index.php/naui/article/view/7930
This article deals with bodies as an ecology, in the quilombo of Serra do Evaristo/CE. The description of the importance, water management, agriculture, landscape, and healing systems in conjunction with some narratives characterized the empirical material. Through this particular ethnographic case, I aim to demonstrate, more generally, how an ecological approach to understanding the body can provide a closer description of this experience in contemporary quilombos.
Cauê Machado Copyright (c) 2025 Cadernos NAUI https://ojs.sites.ufsc.br/index.php/naui/article/view/7930 Fri, 24 Jan 2025 00:00:00 +0000 HEALING PRACTICES AND EXPERIENCES OF QUILOMBOLA YOUTH https://ojs.sites.ufsc.br/index.php/naui/article/view/7564
This study examines the healing practices adopted by young quilombolas individuals from the Serra do Evaristo community, aiming to understand how these youth deal with issues related to health, well-being, and spirituality in their daily lives. A qualitative approach was employed, using participant observation, interviews, and questionnaires to investigate their perceptions and practices. The analysis of drawings produced during the workshop revealed significant locations in the community, such as the chapel, soccer fields, and nature in general. The youth expressed a deep connection to quilombola history and culture, acknowledging their people's struggle for basic rights. They demonstrated knowledge and use of medicinal plants, preferring natural resources for health care. Religiosity and faith play a fundamental role in their lives, being recurrent in moments of difficulty. It is concluded that these traditional knowledge and connection with nature are essential elements for the well-being and health of these young quilombola individuals, highlighting the need for public policies sensitive to their communities.
Francisco Welder Silva de Lima, James Ferreira Moura Junior Copyright (c) 2025 Cadernos NAUI https://ojs.sites.ufsc.br/index.php/naui/article/view/7564 Fri, 24 Jan 2025 00:00:00 +0000 Valores culturales y prácticas de salud https://ojs.sites.ufsc.br/index.php/naui/article/view/7606
Over the past two centuries, indigenous communities have faced processes of devaluation and dispossession that have negatively impacted the preservation of their culture, but the turn of the twentieth to twenty-first century has marked a turning point. This work focuses on the revalorization of traditional mapuche knowledge in the Northwest of Buenos Aires, focusing on their health-related practices. Using a qualitative approach based on case studies, Stephenson's (2008) cultural values model is employed as a tool to understand and analyze these knowledge systems, highlighting specific considerations for addressing the study of indigenous communities.
Melina Yuln, Cristina Curia, María del Huerto Revaz Copyright (c) 2025 Cadernos NAUI https://ojs.sites.ufsc.br/index.php/naui/article/view/7606 Fri, 24 Jan 2025 00:00:00 +0000
