Abstract

In this article, we investigate the political propaganda carried out through the newspapers “O Estado”, “Diário da Tarde” and “Correio Lageano”, in the 1954 elections for the Federal Senate, held in Santa Catarina. During this electoral process, Getúlio Vargas, then president of the Republic, committed suicide. Here we investigate the instrumentalization of Vargas' death by the oligarchic forces that competed for state power since the First Republic.
