Abstract

This article uses the memories of Afro-descendants to better understand the narratives that involve the work relations between white masters and the direct descendants of former slaves in the post-abolition period in Garopaba-SC, more specifically in the first decades of the twentieth century, in the neighborhoods Campo D'una and Encantada. Using the methodology of oral history, the study seeks to investigate, through reports, how these individuals understood concepts such as slavery, freedom and free work. In addition, the objective is to highlight the contributions of Afro-descendants to the history of Garopaba, exploring their cultural and religious practices and their work, which were somehow neglected by local historiography.
