Parla! Florianopolis monumens hitory telling

Abstract

The scope of the research was to gather information about monuments (statues, bust, hermas and heads) in Florianópolis, at the neighborhoods located in Santa Catarina Island. Design of monuments and its insciptions were analyzed as well as the surrounding environment. It was a exploratory descriptive study with bibliographic, hemerographic (internet included) and field research followed by discourse analysis. As a result it can be stated that few monuments communicate a clear message on the commemorated person or event, so they are not accomplishing the role modernity attributes to monuments, that of tightening social bounds. They instead play the aesthetic role attributed by post modernity even some of them neither of both due to lack of conservation. The study is only a first approach on the issue and implies in revision on the role of monuments as educators.
