Farra do boi: from culture to violence

Abstract

This work has no intention of analyzing if the farra do boi [a custom practiced in Brazil involving the chasing of a bull] is a “crime” or “popular culture”, or if it is of good or bad character. We aim to discuss what lead to its resistance with the State, as well as present the arguments of those involved. We looked into the Press’ view on a selection of documents of a Civil Public Action against Santa Catarina State, which demands the end of farra do boi practicing, motion expressed along thirteen volumes up to the moment. However, we point out that due to the introduction character of this academic work, we will not be able in to discuss the matter in depth, only dealing superficially with important questions of the subject.
