“The death of martyr journalist”: Reflections about the attempt repercussion against Crispim Mira

Abstract

Crispim Mira is considered by many people one of the greatest journalists from Santa Catarina. An attempt on his life made on the editorial room of his newspaper, Folha Nova, caused his untimely death, which shocked the city people and was widely discussed in Santa Catarina’s and Brazil’s press. This paper aims to examine how Mira’s death was reported in the press and show how it was used to praise the freedom of press. This paper’s sources are news on the attempt from several newspapers, transcribed and commented by the Folha Nova paper, from February 18th to March 10th, 1927.
