The question of land limits between Santa Catarina and Paraná: an analysis of the governors messages from 1900 to 1916

Abstract

The question of land limits between the States of Santa Catarina and Paraná begins in the dismembering of this district from the province of São Paulo in 1853. However, from 1900, this debate shows more present in the reports presented to the Legislative Congress of each State. The interest in increasing their influence and tax revenue generates conflicts over a border area occupied mostly by poor peasants. The intention of this article is to describe the discussions between the two governors, and the way they legitimized its speech on the defense of the contested lands.
