Abstract

With this article, I will observe the Kaingáng’s history by analyzing the way they worship their dead, the Kiki ritual, trying to understand it as part of the history. I support my arguments through an introduction about this indigenous ethnic group and also the Baldus’s writings – “Ensaios sobre a Etnologia Brasileira” [Essays on Brazilian Ethnology], as primary source. Moreover, there is a analysis of the consequences of the indigenous policies and the “Indian Protection Service”, which took place during the Brazil’s first Republic, interfering in the Kaingáng’s way of life, and so we realize the Kiki ritual as representing these consequences.
