Abstract

This paper analyzes the devastation of the Araucaria Forest, known scientifically as Mixed Ombrófila Forest (FOM), in the State of Santa Catarina, relating it to the beginning of peopling of the catarinense west in the late 19th and early 20th. We seek to bring into focus the current need to preserve the few remaining areas of native forest – the Araucaria Forest, Mixed Ombrófila Forest (FOM)” – that today are limited to less than 7% of the original, which is verified by creating two protected areas: The National Park of Araucaria and the Ecological Station of Black Forest, which together represent an area of approximately 18,000 hectares.
