Abstract

On 1911, Orestes Guimarães, a teacher from São Paulo, was hired by the governor of Santa Catarina, Vidal Ramos, to begin a campaign for a state’s educational reform. This paper intends to clear up that this was one of the first attempts to reform and nationalize the teaching in Santa Catarina, and also to analyze the changes in the didactic-pedagogic methods, as well as to show the measures took by the government for foreign schools, within his idea of nationalization’s politics in the context of Santa Catarina’s First Republic.
