Abstract

This article approaches the polemic about the denomination of the catarinense capital, emerging within the end of Military Dictatorship and reaffirms the principal feature about the alteration process. The domination of this town wasn’t limited as a simple honor to Marechal Floriano Peixoto, nor only to give the city his name, but was a part of a larger program of the legitimization of the new regime. The lack of historical knowledge and other factors prevented the groups whom polarized the debate to develop it a more elaborate way. However, the population – even thought was referenced in this shock – stayed outside of this, without knowing the reasons and wherefores of the name.
