"As if were born from free birth": work and freedom in Desterro at the end of the nineteenth century

Abstract

This paper discusses the possibility that a slave had to obtain their freedom in the city of Desterro in the late nineteenth century and the paths that should go to get it. Therefore, we used notarial sources, such as letters of freedom and contract for services with free slaves in the books of notes, as well as specific books of notes of slaves.
