Abstract

Abstract: Looking into the frame of Ricœur's philosophy, in which ontology is never detached from hermeneutics, whereby language acquires a consistent primacy, the present paper will investigate the ontological dimension implied in the symbolic language. If philosophy does not proceed directly towards being, but deals with the opacity of symbol and with its plurality of meanings, the reason is that the symbolic sphere represents a fertile source for outlining the power of language to reconfigure the reality of the world and of human action. However, the study of the relationship between the symbolic language and its ontological dimension requires the preliminary but central task to figure out a consistent frame for Ricœur's heterogeneous researches on the symbol. At that point, the way towards ontology will require to conjure up a transcendental level, that might enable us to anchor concrete symbols on a larger symbolic background and to found the ambiguity of meaning on reflection.
