The war of neoliberal ideas

Abstract: It is frequently alleged that we live in a post-ideological era, one in which utopian projects don't hold any significant force anymore. We contest here this claim, by showing some of the ideas professed by some important neoliberal thinkers and actors — especially their defense of the importance of the realm of ideas to promote their project of a free market society, and their claim about the existence of a “war of ideas” between them (self-proclaimed individualists) and their enemies (the so called collectivists). Given the widespread (and still growing!) influence these neoliberal thinkers and ideas are having on our time, such a topic deserve a greater attention not only from political activists and social scientists, but also from philosophers: Hegelians (like me) who think philosophy is its own time in thought, Foucaultians who want to do an ontology of the present, or Marxists who want to do a critique of ideology should take neoliberalism as a philosophical object of first rank.

Keywords:Neoliberalism; ideology; critical theory.
