Abstract

Popular medicine gained in Brazil a particular meaning. With the junction of elements brought from diverse cultures, Brazilian cure practices had formulated a singular knowledge. In a society that sanctions the scientific knowledge in such a way as ours, the presence of the popular medicine is very intense. Acting through the women healers, in Santa Catarina Island, popular medicine shows another conception of illness and cure, that does not separate body and spirit. The process of the cure is made by the union of pray, “simpatias” (popular practices) and medicines.
