Abstract

This article discusses the causes that led Santa Catarina, more precisely Laguna, to join the Farroupilha Revolution. For that we reflect on the role of the local elite lagunense divided into a group linked to the central government and other forces of the southern Brazil. Were used as sources the newspaper "O Povo" and the speech of the President of the Province of Santa Catarina, Carlos Pardal, in 1839, and President of the Province of Santa Catarina Soares D'Andrea, in 1840.
