Abstract

Written between 1923 and 1924 and published in 1927, Amar, verbo intransitivo: idílio is a literary novel written by Mário de Andrade (1893-1945). The third-person narrator is a witness and records descriptions of the affective-sexual initiation of Carlos Alberto Sousa Costa, the first-born son and successor of Felisberto Sousa Costa and Mrs Laura. His father, Felisberto, hires the amorology services of Elza, the Fraülein - Fraülein, from the original German, is short for Frau, lady. This is the central theme, the narrative structure of which is description over narration. This essay, through literary criticism of Mário de Andrade's poetic prose, seeks to analyse the imagery of the meanings and their social determination as a work of art, especially the obstacles and limits of femininity and its asceticism to the interface. To this end, we have used a summary of the complete work and a selection of articles with a corresponding theme, the first of which is attached as an appendix to this essay.
