Abstract

INTRODUCTION: The Mini Clinical Evaluative Exercise (Mini-CEX) was created for the clinical evaluation of resident physicians by the American Board of Internal Medicine. It is a non-simulated assessment, during real consultations, in different clinical scenarios. It assesses six main competencies: medical interviewing, physical examination, professionalism, clinical judgment, communication and organization skills.

OBJECTIVES: To review the available literature on Mini-CEX exercise and verify what has already been published on the application of the Mini-CEX in medical residencies.

METHODOLOGY: This is a review study. To identify the articles on the topic, searches were carried out with the descriptor “Mini-CEX” in the Pubmed and Scielo databases in August 2022.

RESULTS: Thirty-five scientific articles on the topic were reviewed and the experiences of using the Mini-CEX in emergency and medical residencies in Internal Medicine, Family and Community Medicine, Pediatric Cardiology and Obstetrics Gynecology were reported.

CONCLUSIONS: The application of the Mini-CEX in medical residency is not only feasible but also desirable, as it can contribute to the professional growth of the resident. The biggest challenge concerns the preceptor's dedication time and training to apply the tool and provide proper feedback.
