Abstract

THE MUSIC MARKET IN AMAZONAS UNDER THE AEGIS OF LABORISM

Abstract

Laborism is recognized as one of the main political currents in Amazonas. However, its cultural implications still require further investigation. This article aims to reflect on a period between the 1950s and 1960s when it is possible to observe two fields of professional activity of musicians in Amazonas. First, we highlight the secular-private sphere of popular festivals where jazz bands and orchestras performed at the headquarters of football clubs. On the other hand, in the field of institutional development, military and school bands were of great importance as spaces for ideological formation and preparation for work. Considering the strength of the cultural policies implemented by labor governments in the 1950s, we analyze the maturation of organizational consciousness that emerged in the flourishing of this music market, as well as the participation of women through the Banda do Instituto Benjamim Constant.

Keywords: Music market; labor movement in Amazonas; overexploitation of labor.
