Abstract

This paper seeks to demonstrate how the re-election of Donald Trump intensifies
historical tensions between the United States and the Global South, especially the BRICS,
by reinforcing protectionist policies and sanctions aimed at containing the rise of these
economies. To this end, we discuss the rise of countries on the global periphery since the
2000s and the emergence of a movement to deny this dynamic on the part of Western
countries, demonstrating American and European Union resistance as obstacles to
reformulating the current global order towards a more equitable and democratic model.
This has resulted in new economic and political disputes, especially in the face of
Trumpist rhetoric and the possibility of intensified measures that could affect emerging
markets and deepen global economic fragmentation.
