COVID-19 IN THE CITY OF JOINVILLE, SC

Abstract

Introduction: The city of Joinville, in Santa Catarina (SC), had the first case of COVID-19 on March 13, 2020 and the first death on March 30, 2020. The analysis of the health indicators of the disease is important to understand the behavior of SARS-CoV-2 in Joinville, the third most populous city in the southern region of Brazil. Objective: To analyze health indicators related to COVID-19 in the city of Joinville during the year 2021. Methods: An ecological study carried out in the city of Joinville, SC. The number of new cases, deaths, incidence rate and mortality rate were analyzed according to the variables gender and age group. Data were obtained from the Joinville COVID-19 Panel, the COVID-19 SC Case Panel and DataSUS. Results: 75,811 new cases and 1,573 deaths were recorded in the period, with March being the month with the highest number of records. Women had higher disease incidence rates in all analyzed months, while men had higher mortality rates. In the age group between 20 and 59 years old, a higher frequency of cases was observed, while the age group over 60 years old registered a higher frequency of deaths. Conclusion: Disparities were observed in disease indicators in the city of Joinville, according to sex and age group.
