Abstract

The implementation of lean production is a continuous improvement process that requires the assessment of its progress over time. On the other hand, adaptations to the implementation and assessment of lean production are usually necessary, since each production system has particular contextual characteristics. Considering the scarcity of adaptive assessment methods in the literature, this article proposes a method that incorporates the contextual variables of production volume, process repetitiveness and demand stability as parameters of adaptation to the lean production assessment. The method starts from an evaluation checklist of 15 lean practices and uses the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to relate contextual variables to lean practices. The applicability of the method was tested in a footwear factory that has experienced a lean production implementation process. The results showed that the plant is still at an intermediate stage of lean implementation. However, the adapted assessment indicated the priority improvement areas that were truly important to the company. Thus, it was possible to conclude that the proposed method is applicable and fulfills its purpose of adaptation in the process of lean production assessment.
